New Jersey Transit has announced to its riders that their commutes will be indefinitely delayed due to Amtrak maintenance at New York Penn Station. The agency stated that passengers could experience delays of up to 30 minutes on weekdays and weekends.
The announcement comes on the heels of a particularly difficult past month at the station, which is the nation’s busiest. Several back-to-back incidents, including derailments of Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains and assorted power failures, have pummeled the 107-year old rail terminal. Amtrak, the owner of the station, is taking a more aggressive stance with its maintenance program, and is reportedly considering carrying out repairs during weekday hours, in addition to its pre-existing night-time and weekend time slots.
